Volunteer Opportunities-inner page
With six themed gardens, monthly special events and a thriving education program and visitor services needs, there are plenty of ways to connect with Powell Gardens through volunteerism.

Special Events

Powell Gardens has several fun-filled events annually and they don’t happen without enthusiastic volunteers! Greeters, crafts, face painting and guest services are among the options. Choose your job and your shift—you can sign up for one or all of our special events.

Tour Guide

Show off Powell Gardens as you direct small groups. Once a tour is booked, guides are notified and can choose the dates that suit their schedules.

Work with your hands and with beautiful plants and flowers. Each of our core Gardens has a staff person in charge of a garden area and a team of volunteers who plant, weed, harvest and maintain the plantings. Contact the Volunteer Coordinator for specific openings in each garden. Our volunteers work in the Heartland Harvest Garden, Visitor Center/Conservatory displays, Island Garden, Rock and Waterfall Garden, Perennial Garden, Greenhouse and Fountain Garden.

Tasting Station

Volunteers at the Tasting Station get to introduce visitors to produce fresh from the garden and teach them about new and interesting varieties. Tasting Stations are open seven days a week with two shifts per day; morning and afternoon, so you can choose dates and times that suit your schedule.

Adult or Youth Education

We have gardening and art classes for children and adults plus host thousands of kids on field trips. Occasionally we need volunteers for these programs, so if you have a background or interest in education and a flexible schedule ask about getting involved.

Visitor Information Desk

Greet and assist visitors in the Visitor Education Center. These diligent volunteers also help with preparations for special events, classes and mailings as time permits.

We have a limited number of volunteer office helpers. They file, organize, stuff envelopes and make calls all to support the work of the Gardens.

Garden Interpreter

Share your knowledge and love for the Gardens with visitors during select special events we need volunteers to interact with guests as Garden Interpreters. This could be running a Discovery Station or giving a demonstration on a particular gardening technique or simply telling folks about the Garden you are in.

Heartland Harvest Garden

With 12 acres of edible landscaping, the Heartland Harvest Garden showcases our food from seed to plate. If you have an interest in natural gardening, eating fresh, growing fruits and vegetables, then this is the garden for you.

Fun Foods Farm

The children’s section of the Heartland Harvest Garden needs its own team of volunteers. Get involved in creating a space for children to have fun while learning about the journey of their food from seed to plate.

Six Days of Summer!

We understand schedules are busy--that's why we've introduced a new way to volunteer called Six Days of Summer.
