Owl Prowl with WildHERness
Friday, August 14 | 7:30-10 p.m.
Experience the magic of the outdoors after dark as wildHERness and Powell Gardens invite you to discover the fascinating world of owls. The evening begins with a special opportunity to meet a live owl while learning about its unique adaptations, behaviors, and important role in our local ecosystems.
Afterward, we’ll set out on a guided nighttime hike through the peaceful garden trails, illuminated only by red-light headlamps to help preserve our night vision and minimize disturbance to wildlife. Along the way, we’ll make periodic stops to listen for owl calls and, where appropriate and permitted, use electronic calls in hopes of attracting a curious owl for observation. While wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed, the excitement of exploring the forest at night and listening to the sounds of nature makes for an unforgettable experience.
This event is open to anyone who can remain reasonably quiet during the hike, as minimizing noise greatly increases our chances of hearing and observing owls. Whether you’re an experienced birder or simply curious about the natural world after sunset, this unique evening offers an opportunity to slow down, sharpen your senses, and experience the wonder of nocturnal wildlife.
Participants should wear weather-appropriate clothing, sturdy walking shoes, and bring a red-light headlamp or flashlight if they have one. A limited number of red lights may be available to borrow. All participants must complete a 2026 Liability Event Waiver, located on the WildHERness website, to attend.
