Meet an instructor: Janalea Hoffman and her native flute

Categories: Blog, Newsworthy, Weekend Planner

The vast selection of classes and workshops we offer at Powell Gardens is possible thanks to our partnerships with area experts and instructors who share their knowledge of watercolor, basketry, yoga and more.

This month, meet Janalea Hoffman, instructor of both the ‘Learn to Play the Native Flute’ and ‘The Healing Concert’ workshops. Hoffman operates the music-therapy company Rhythmic Medicine, which provides workshops and music therapy-related services to the Kansas City area. She is the author of the book “Rhythmic Medicine: Music With A Purpose,” and has published 14 therapeutic music CDs.

Hoffman uses her flute-playing skills to lead a cancer support group and other healing practices. She currently plays the flute bedside for patients at Shawnee Mission Medical Center and other locations. This service is provided through her nonprofit Sounds of Comfort, which has a mission of providing soothing and comforting music for individuals who are recovering from illness or who are in hospice care. For her continued work in music as medicine, Hoffman received the Spirit Award from Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Nebraska.

Her ‘Learn to Play the Native Flute’ workshop remains popular at Powell Gardens, where Hoffman has been teaching for more than a decade. She says this instrument is easy to learn and is a wonderful meditative tool. The next workshop is Saturday, March 9. Learn more and sign up here.

Hoffman’s Healing Concert on Saturday afternoon offers participants the chance to learn more about the role of music in healing as well as the opportunity to experience Hoffman’s meditative music in the serene setting of the Marjorie Powell Allen Chapel. Learn more and register here.
