Frida Style: Exhibition Premiere

Join us for the Kansas City premiere of Frida Kahlo’s Garden, a traveling exhibition on view exclusively at Powell Gardens. This ticketed event features live music, cocktails, and food inspired by indigenous Mexican cuisine. Enjoy a performance by Kansas City playwright and actress Vanessa Severo, who portrays Frida Kahlo in Frida: A Self Portrait (performed at the Kansas City Repertory Theatre beginning April 19). A special musical performance by Maria the Mexican/Maria Cuevas, a hands-on painting activity facilitated by Kansas City artist Vania Soto, and an exhibition walk-through with Kansas City chef Renee Kelly who will discuss the culinary side of Kahlo’s work are also part of the event.
Vania Soto Painting Demonstrations | 6:00-10:00 p.m.
Vania Soto has been an artist all of her life, but has been selling her work professionally for the past thirteen years. She takes inspiration from artists she admires including Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and also Mexican culture and traditions such as Dia de Los Muertos. She paints primarily with main acrylics but also enjoys working in mixed media. She considers her style to be a mix of realism and surrealism.

Kansas City’s uber-local chef of Harvest, creating a living breathing fabric of sustainability through her knowledge and playful nature.With a 20 year background in hospitality and working with farmers, the community and soil, Renée has broadened her career across the globe.
Renee has also created an appetizer menu for the evening based on recipes inspired by Frida Kahlo.

After suffering polio as a child, a grisly bus accident in her teens that left her with permanent injuries and in almost constant pain, and an addiction to Morphine, Mexican painter Frida Kahlo’s life is explored in this astonishing play by KCRep’s Fox Fellowship Resident Actor Vanessa Severo. Through beautiful physicality and raw honesty, the triumphs and challenges of the now-celebrated painter and wife of the equally-renowned artist, Diego Rivera, is unearthed in the brave new work.

Celebrate mushrooms and all things fermented with a daylong event featuring tastings, demonstrations and classes. Enjoy FREE classes with topics such as growing mushrooms, composting, and making mead (space is limited).
Live music by Maria the Mexican/Maria Cuevas, food vendors, and a ticketed beer garden showcasing regional microbrewers are also part of the fun. Admission to the beer garden is limited to those 21 years and older–ID required. Beer and food sales begin at 11 am. Last call for alcohol is 5:30 p.m.
A free make-a-mushroom hat activity is available for families during the day.

“I like fermenting, pickling and curing as methods of preservation for the transformative experience,” says chef Rick Mullins, who serves as executive chef at Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art. Known for his interest in using preservation methods to reduce food waste and layer flavors, Mullins plans to feature the earthy smell and umami (a taste sensation produced by glutamates) of mushrooms from Grand River Mushrooms, a grower in Chillicothe, Mo., in a three-course, family-style dinner using ingredients sourced from the gardens and local farms. Local fermented beverages will round out this unique experience hosted by Jill Silva under the eaves of the Heartland Harvest Garden Missouri Barn.

Grab your dad and your appetite and join us on Father’s Day for this special ticketed event in the Heartland Harvest Garden. Hosted under the eaves of the Missouri Barn, this special salute to fathers features fresh, hearty bites prepared by Kansas City’s Urban Cafe. Enjoy dry-rubbed Wingz, Elvis sliders, and corn and black bean quinoa salad while you listen to the music of Ernest James Zydeco. Dads with ID also get one free beer! A cash bar featuring wine, beer, and soft drinks is also available.

Missouri Barn Dinner with Chef Michael Foust

Enjoy garden bounty and brews in the Missouri Barn with Chef Michael Foust of The Farmhouse and Black Sheep + Market. Join Chef Foust, the featured chef-in-residence in our Farm-to-Table garden, for a welcome cocktail and a chat about the farm-to-table movement, then enjoy a three-course, family-style meal using Powell Gardens-grown vegetables and local meats prepared in the Argentinian style over open flame. The meal will feature beer pairings presented by Michael Crane of Crane Brewing, a brewer-in-residence in our Fermentation Field. Your host for this unique evening is Jill Silva, culinary specialist and food writer, owner of Jill Silva Food.
