What is a private event at Powell Gardens?

Any gathering in need of a private space is considered a private event. Examples include weddings, vow renewals, receptions, proposals, corporate and business retreats, and memorials. Guests may choose from a wide variety of locations, including but not limited to the Marjorie Powell Allen Chapel, Marlese Lowe Gourley Island Garden, Missouri Barn, and more!

  •  You will be the only wedding guests on the grounds starting at 1 p.m. getting ready at the Chapel Study, and the only ceremony held during the afternoon and the only reception on the grounds.

Located adjacent to the Marjorie Powell Allen Chapel, the Memorial Garden offers the perfect place for a peaceful respite to honor your loved ones. Commemorating family or friends with a memorial plaque creates a lasting testament in a beautiful and serene setting.

  • Capacity for Memorial Garden includes up to 25 people.  
  • Capacity for the Marjorie Powell Allen Chapel includes up to 140 people.

Private Events Location Details 

Marjorie Powell Allen Chapel
Opened in 1996, the Marjorie Powell Allen Chapel is a nondenominational chapel featuring doors that stretch 13 feet high. The structure has 2,550 square feet of glass, allowing the building to blend with the surrounding Midwest landscape. It’s 47 feet high, 102 feet long, and seats up to 120 people. Redwood, glass, limestone, and flagstone were all used to build this beautiful building. The Marjorie Powell Allen Chapel is named after Marjorie Powell Allen, sister to Powell Gardens’ founder, George Powell Sr. Marjorie often rested under a tree nearby. This space offers room for up to 140 people for private events.

Miller Hammond Chapel Study
Opened in 2018, the Miller Hammond Chapel Study sits adjacent to the Marjorie Powell Allen Chapel. It was designed by Walter Jennings of Maurice Jennings Architects (now Jennings + Santa Rita Architects) to complement the existing Marjorie Powell Allen Chapel space. The Miller Hammond Chapel Study, a beautiful structure offering dressing rooms for wedding parties, a cozy space for a private event, or a gorgeous setting for a corporate retreat, is set among the trees and plants that line the path to the Marjorie Powell Allen Chapel. This space offers room for up to 35 people for private events.

Conservatory
The crown jewel of Powell Gardens’ Visitor Center, the glass-domed Conservatory offers a climate-controlled setting inspired by a variety of plants and showcases rotating displays in support of seasonal events. This space offers room for up to 60 people for private events.

Grand Hall
Nestled in the 18,000-square-foot building known as the Visitor Center, the Grand Hall is a stunning indoor location brimming with natural light. Flanked by two grand fireplaces, this location is the first to greet visitors and guests alike! This space offers room for up to 150 people for private events.  

Conifer Room
The Conifer Room is located on the north side of the Visitor Center. Featuring a special exit to the Conifer Garden, the spacious room provides ample space for corporate retreats, guest speakers, luncheons, and even comes with a full-screen projector. This space offers room for up to 100 people for private events. 

Terrace Room
Located on the opposite side of the Visitor Center, The Terrace Room offers gorgeous views of the Terrace Gardens and Hummingbird Garden. This space offers room for up to 100 people for private events.   

Fountain Garden
The Fountain Garden connects Powell Gardens, Kansas City’s botanical garden, to the City of Fountains. Centered between the Visitor Center, the Heartland Harvest Garden and the Conifer Garden, this family favorite space features a 42-foot diameter interactive water feature, surrounded by colorful annuals, Powell Gardens’ iris collection, and seasonal displays. The fountain’s basin is designed with a floral motif composed of different colors and textures of granite. This space offers room for up to 120-140 people for private events.

Marlese Lowe Gourley Island Garden
The centerpiece of a 12-acre lake, the Marlese Lowe Gourley Island Garden features a variety of aquatic plants and provides stunning lakeside views of the Marjorie Powell Allen Chapel. Tiered pools in this water garden offer a diverse array of aquatic plants and designed garden beds. The lotus and waterlily collections have been designated as certified collections by the International Waterlily and Water Gardening Society. This space offers room for up to 35 people for private events.

Missouri Barn
Opened in 2009, the Missouri Barn was designed by Jennings + Santa Rita Architects. This contemporary open-sided barn is made from cedar with a natural stain for preservation. The attached 45-foot Silo is patterned after traditional Missouri barn silos and provides an observation deck for viewing the Gardens below. This building can also seat up to 200 people for private events.

Memorial Garden
Located adjacent to the Marjorie Powell Allen Chapel, the Memorial Garden offers serenity and a peaceful space to honor loved ones. The secluded Memorial Garden offers a private sanctuary for honoring your loved one with scattering or placement of cremated remains and a memorial plaque.
