Conifer Tips (May 8-19, 2024)
Powell Gardens will highlight its conifer collection during Conifer Tips (May 8-19)! Conifers, or Coniferae, are a group of woody plants, made up mostly of evergreen trees and shrubs with leaves that are needle-like, though some are scaled. Perhaps their most well-known features are their cones, or pinecones.
All conifers produce cones, though they can vary greatly in appearance – many are woody and with rings of fish-like scales while some, like the little red ‘berries’ of Yews, don’t seem like cones at all. Many conifers, especially spruce and firs, also produce ‘tips’ which are their yearly new growth which often appear as small bunches of lighter, smaller, and more flexible needles. These tips arrive in the late spring and fill our conifer garden with color and new life; it’s a beautiful time to spend a moment exploring the garden.
Make sure to visit Powell Gardens’ Conifer Garden, a certified American Conifer Society reference garden, during Conifer Tips (May 8-19) at Powell Gardens. A digital tour is available via Garden Explorer.

PAST: Daffodil Days (March 27-April 7, 2024)
What is Daffodil Days?
Powell Gardens will celebrate Daffodil Days (March 27-April 7)! Daffodils are often considered the herald of spring’s growing season, brightening landscapes with their blooms. Daffodil Days will include in-person and digital education options. In addition to more than 100,000 daffodils emerging on the East Lawn, look for a daffodil spiral in the Heartland Harvest Garden and search for early spring blooms in the David T. Beals III Woodland and Steam Garden. Learn about all thirteen divisions of daffodils in a display near the Visitor Center.
