Native Orchids 🌱
.
Two species of prairie fringed orchids naturally occur on Missouri’s prairies. As prairies diminished, so did the orchids that made their homes there. Now, the prairie fringed orchid is federally threatened in Missouri.
.
The eastern prairie fringed orchid was considered extirpated, or totally absent, from the state until it was rediscovered in 2009, growing in a small cemetery on a prairie remnant. The Missouri Department of Conservation monitors the progress of these protected orchids.
.
Powell Gardens has two native Missouri orchids growing on site, Spiranthes vernalis (pictured) and Galearis spectabilis. They grow in our remnant prairie.

Dandelion Greens (Taraxacum officinale) 💛
.
Often dismissed as weeds, dandelions offer a nutritional powerhouse in their tender young leaves. Packed with vitamins and minerals, these greens can be harvested from lawns, meadows, or the edges of woodlands.
.
Use them in salads or sauté them with olive oil and garlic for a flavorful and nutritious addition to your spring meals.
