You can usually find Matt, Horticulturist, caring for Powell Gardens’ aquatic collection in Greenhouse 3. If you want to learn more about aquatic gardening, register for the Work and Learn class on April 29 (link in bio). All attendees will take home a hardy waterlily and an aquatic plant instruction handbook.

Currently, Powell Gardens’ living orchid collection includes approximately 1,900 different orchids, representing 55 genera. The collection includes epiphytes, lithophytes, and terrestrials.

#ConservationCorner: Animals utilize various strategies to endure winter conditions, such as migration, hibernation, and adaptation. Have you ever wondered how the winter season impacts a physically small and species rich group of animals, insects?
.
When winter temperatures first arrive in the Midwest, many non-migratory insects enter a state of diapause, a form of dormancy. During dormancy insects infrequently feed and depend on internal reserves of resources for survival. Other known adaptations include increasing energy resources ahead of dormancy, altering internal chemical composition to produce “anti-freeze” compounds, conserving energy use, and utilizing landscape features for shelter.

As stewards of the landscape, providing a diversity of habitat conditions is important throughout the seasons. Consider acknowledging and supporting the needs of insects during the winter, by including leaves and plant stems in your garden from the previous season. In addition to returning nutrients to your garden, plant materials provide areas of protection and heat conservation for insects and other garden visitors!

How does a greenhouse work? 🌱

A greenhouse converts light energy into heat energy. As sunlight enters the greenhouse, plants absorb the sun’s rays and convert the energy into heat. This allows plants to stay warm at night. Powell Gardens’ greenhouse complex enables staff to care for our living collection all year long!

Currently, our staff is caring for 14,822 plants to get ready for the spring season. We can’t wait to see you March 3!

Orchid Delirium (March 3-April 16) returns in 2023 with a vivid and colorful display, celebrating form and shape. Drawing inspiration from the Victorian-era fascination with the flower that led to a collecting hysteria appropriately named 'Orchidelirium', this exhibit showcases hundreds of rotating blooms from Powell Gardens’ 2,000-piece orchid and tropical collections.

As the kick-off to the Gardens’ spring season, this indoor botanical exhibit provides an immersive tropical oasis for all orchid appreciators! Purchase tickets online at powellgardens.org/orchid. Powell Gardens is open Wednesday-Sunday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. during Orchid Delirium.
