This spring, Powell Gardens invites you to experience Orchid Delirium (March 5-April 19, 2026) like never before. This year’s display honors the 250th anniversary of the United States with a celebration that is both stately and botanical.
Orchid Delirium is more than a beautiful display. It’s a reminder of why orchids captivate plant lovers across the world and why they deserve a moment in the spotlight.
Why Orchids?
Orchids are one of the largest and most diverse plant families on Earth, with more than 25,000 species worldwide. They grow on every continent (except Antarctica) in astonishing shapes, colors, and sizes. Some mimic insects. Some smell like chocolate. Some bloom for months while others flower for just a few days.
Their extraordinary adaptations and intricate beauty have made orchids symbols of luxury, refinement, love, and strength throughout history. They have fascinated botanists, inspired explorers, and sparked global “orchid mania”.
And right here in Missouri? They grow in our prairies, woodlands, and wetlands, often hidden in plain sight.

The Display
Upon arrival at the Visitor Center, you’ll be immersed in a celebration of color and design with lush fabrics, dramatic foliage, and vibrant orchids arranged in grand fashion.
The Perennial Lounge will transform into a White House–inspired state dinner, complete with information about “First Lady Orchids.” These special orchid hybrids have been named in honor of First Ladies such as Bess Truman, Lady Bird Johnson, and Jacqueline Kennedy. They reflect orchids’ long-standing association with elegance and distinction.
Step into the Conservatory and you’ll find yourself at the social event of the season. The space is transformed into a gala to welcome spring and celebrate 250 years of American spirit.
Surrounded by waves of blooming orchids and lush tropical foliage, your eyes will take in vibrant color while music fills the air. After months of winter gray, Orchid Delirium delivers a sensory reset with warmth, fragrance, texture, and sound. It’s immersive. It’s joyful. Care to dance?
In the Conifer Room, the focus turns local.
Missouri is home to more than 30 species of native orchids, plants that quietly thrive in forests, glades, and wetlands across the state. Many people are surprised to learn that orchids aren’t just tropical showpieces; they are part of our natural heritage.
Did you know that there are 4 species of native orchid that grow naturally on Powell Garden’s property? In the Native Orchid Spotlight area, you’ll learn how to identify native orchids, when they bloom, and where they can be found. These plants depend on complex relationships with soil fungi and pollinators, making them powerful symbols of ecological balance. By highlighting Missouri’s orchids, Orchid Delirium also celebrates conservation, stewardship, and the importance of protecting native habitats.
