Kingsville, Mo. – Powell Gardens, Kansas City’s botanical garden, proudly announces Phil Bishop as its new Director of Horticulture. Bishop succeeds Susan Mertz, who is retiring after six years at Powell Gardens, leaving a legacy of passion and expertise in garden design, plant collection curation, and community engagement.
Bishop, previously the Assistant Director of Horticulture at Powell Gardens, brings over 25 years of horticultural experience to his new role. Known for his commitment to developing people and dedication to the Gardens’ mission, he has been instrumental in guiding the horticulture team and enhancing the visitor experience.
“I am honored to step into this role and continue the incredible work Susan has done,” said Bishop. “Powell Gardens is a unique and wonderful place for the Kansas City community, and I look forward to furthering its impact as a cultural and environmental hub in the region.”
Under Mertz’s leadership, Powell Gardens flourished, leading the horticulture team to new achievements in showcasing its plant collections. Orchid Delirium and Horticulture Highlights (like Daffodil Days, Conifer Tips, Desert Days, Wildflower Week, and Waterlily Wonders) were all created with this vision in mind. Her vision and commitment to botanical excellence have set the stage for a seamless transition to Bishop’s leadership.
“Working at Powell Gardens has been the highlight of my career,” said Mertz. “I am confident Phil will guide the Gardens into an exciting new chapter, building on its traditions while embracing new opportunities.”
As the Director of Horticulture, Bishop will oversee Powell Gardens’ renowned plant collections, seasonal exhibits, and conservation efforts while championing innovative projects and community partnerships. For more information, please visit powellgardens.org.
