Powell Gardens is known for its artistic combinations of plants but throughout the year visitors also can enjoy art of another sort in the gallery space of the Visitor Education Center. Today we meet artist Carol Monaco of Independence, Mo., whose work is on display now through the end of April.
Carol will greet visitors and talk about her work during an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 28. The open house is included with regular Garden admission.
Q. What advice would you give to beginning artists?
I’ve been painting for most of my life, but just recently retired and now have the time to dedicate a large portion of my time to painting. My advice to beginners: Dedication and perseverance Set goals and follow your dreams. Practicing every day at any craft hones skills. Take workshops to expand your knowledge and absorb techniques of different artists. You’ll always learn something new!
Q. How did you first learn about Powell Gardens?
Being a lifelong resident of Kansas City, I was aware of Powell Gardens for years. I love so many things about the Gardens … the peaceful grounds, the beautiful flowers, being surrounded by nature, the wonderful gift shop and of course, the gallery!
If you’d like to explore your own artistic side, check out some of the art-related classes offered through our Adult Education Program, including basket making and sculptured cement garden art. Visit www.powellgardens.org/learning for the full schedule.
