Located on a picturesque island in the center of Powell Gardens’ 12-acre lake, the Marlese Lowe Gourley Island Garden has delighted visitors since opening in 2001. Connected by a winding pathway and surrounded by stunning views of the Marjorie Powell Allen Chapel, the garden offers a peaceful retreat where every turn reveals something new.

A Living Collection of Aquatic Plants

This garden showcases an extraordinary collection of aquatic plants from around the world. Throughout late summer, colorful tropical and hardy waterlilies float across the pools while dramatic lotus blooms rise above the water on tall stems. Every August, the Island Garden becomes the stage for one of the unique traditions in the botanical garden world, the annual Waterlily Weigh-Off hosted by Denver Botanic Gardens.

The strength of each plant is tested while staff members see how much weight each waterlily can hold. The competition is a great opportunity to see these botanical giants up close while learning more about the care and cultivation of aquatic plants.
